Alarcon:
Majority Rejection of US Blockade to be expected at the UN
HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 1 (acn) Cuban Parliament President Ricardo Alarcon
expressed his confidence in that, on October 28th, the UN General
Assembly will condemn the US blockade against Cuba.
Alarcon delivered a speech at the opening of the working sessions
of the commissions on health, the economy, and labor, constitution
and legal affairs of the Latin American Parliament (PARLATINO) which
will meet until Friday at Havana’s Hotel Nacional de Cuba.
In his address to legislators from 14 Latin American and Caribbean
countries and representatives of the diplomatic corps, Alarcon clarified
that in its 50 years of existence, the criminal policy is as valid
and intact as from day one, and voiced his hope that the Obama Administration
puts an end to it and goes beyond mere expectations.
The head of the Cuban Parliament recalled that the US government
continues to protect notorious terrorists like Luis Posada Carriles,
and maintains five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly incarcerated,
who were trying to warn Cuba on terrorist actions against its citizens
and facilities.
Both Alarcon and Mexican Senator María de los Angeles Moreno,
secretary for the PARLATINO commissions, demanded the reinstatement
of legitimate Honduran president Jose Manuel Zelaya in his post,
and expressed their concern on the physical integrity of the head
of state, as well as that of the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa,
where he’s now a guest.
Moreno said that these meetings are every important in times when
the world crisis deepens and, as a result, unemployment, hunger
and social inequalities. Also threatened by these problems are the
rights of the peoples to food, health and education.
After warning that developing nations are the most affected, even
in the face of phenomena associated to climate change and epidemics
resulting from lack of resources to combat them, the Mexican senator
underscored that integration is vital in order palliate or face
common challenges in a better way.
Also present at the meeting’s inauguration were PARLATINO
acting president Amilcar Figueroa, and Diana Martínez Pí
and Emil Guevara, presidents of the commissions of Health and Economic
Affairs, respectively.
