Vice President Continues Visiting Haiti
Written by Ileana Ferrer Fonte
Port-au-Prince, Feb 9 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Vice President Esteban
Lazo continues on Tuesday his visit to devastated Haiti, where more
than 1,000 collaborators from his country have been working in the
health sphere for over a decade.
Lazo told Prensa Latina that the objective of his trip is to assess,
with Haitian authorities, the proposal by the Bolivarian Alliance
for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) of supporting the creation
of a new public health system in the country.
The visitor recalled details of his meeting on Monday with Haitian
President Rene Preval, who said: "I hope all countries were
as Cuba, which always works for the future."
The idea is to provide a true primary assistance system to guarantee
people's health, starting from the ALBA efforts and supported by
the Cuban experience in this country that started in 1998, after
the damage caused by Hurricane George.
Cuban collaborators are currently working in three health institutions
in Port-au-Prince and seven Integral Diagnostic Centers (CDI).
Lazo visited on Monday two hospitals in this capital, a field hospital
in the locality of Croix des Bouquets, and a CDI in the town of
Mirebalais, in Center Department.
The Cuban official spoke with dozens of patients, was interest
in the running of those facilities, and talked with Cuban and Haitian
collaborators, being the latter pre-graduate students from the Latin
American School of Medicine or physicians studying their specialties.
