Santiago
de Cuba: the Tremor, the Terror and the Cold
By: Marta Cabrales
Santiago de Cuba, Jan 14 (Prensa Latina) Even today, nearly 48
hours after the earthquake struck Haiti and its aftershocks in the
region, apprehension dominates me at the computer, it was precisely
there where I experienced a strange sick feeling before the balancing
of my desk that afternoon.
To many people in town something similar happened and even two
days later that remains the prevailing topic of conversation in
homes, workplaces and public spaces in a city where the quake, imperceptible
or not, is unfortunately part of the idiosyncrasy.
As recently as the months of October and November, each tremor
though slight, had been putting people in the city in stress, but
the quake on Tuesday, for its longer duration, had a remarkable
impact, which joined the momentary danger of a tsunami alert in
the eastern coastal area.
In the following hours, the cruel reality prevailed and even when
here there were no loss of life nor damages, the proximity of the
West Indian country virtually devastated by the earthquake causes
a sense of loss and sadness that only the sense of solidarity can
bring relief.
The country's aid to the suffering people of Haiti left from Antonio
Maceo International Airport, where the Cuban medical brigades are
already healing the wounds and pains.
The Santiago de Cuba brotherâ?Ös heat also attempts
to calm the desperation of hundreds of students from that nation
who are studying at the local medical university in various health
specialties.
The preparation to handle such disasters and the institutional
will to mitigate them are the only arsenal to the mystique of the
bowels of the planet.
From here, the specialists of the National Center for Earthquake
Research (CENAIS) daily scrutinize these depths and warned about
its behavior, mainly from the Geodynamic Observatory located on
the road to Siboney.
In this work, Cuba is connected to international networks and working
with data and information to facilitate the follow-up in the most
diverse latitudes.
The system of civil defense, meanwhile, has the indispensable scientific
instrument for the protection of the population.
